Acitone

Background

With a passion for music bordering on obsession and an insatiable appetite for collecting music new and old; it is fair to say that Geraint Rees has made it his mission to share, create and curate music for others. A trained musician, he found himself involved with music from a young age, playing in everything from jazz groups and brass bands through to psychedelic prog-punk groups. However, it was the spirit of acid house that really captivated him. His band practiced for a short-lived period above Sankeys Soap in Manchester in the late nineties but he was already obsessed with the electronic sounds that made the walls rumble down in the club below (not to mention his bandmates Roland sh101!). One mind-blowing Orbital gig later and a visit to the legendary Hacienda to see Laurent Garnier and the deal was sealed.

So began the weekend pilgrimages every Saturday on the train down to Voodoo – Liverpool’s bastion of all things techno – followed by a never-ending summer of festivals…

By the noughties, he was running techno night Shuffle at the tiny basement space at Zumbar but would also guest at clubs across the city such as Paradise Factory and Sankeys Soap alongside the likes of techno stalwarts Mark Broom, Surgeon, and Phil Kieran. Despite his initiation in ‘club techno’ he maintained a stubborn refusal to be pigeon-holed into one genre, with a particular fondness for the deeper shades of house that often warmed up the dancefloors. As a DJ, his sets veered from emotive deep house to rare Detroit techno and electro gems.  He honed his skills further in extended after-hours sessions often having to be dragged away from the decks but it was time to find a new output for his creativity.

In 2016 he had his first release ‘Diva In Detroit’ on Stripped Digital, a homage to Motor City and a nod in the direction of certain Mr. Garnier. The release found support from Andy Cato and Stacey Pullen and releases followed on the label. After the birth of his son, he took a hiatus to focus on family but now returns with a string of productions already in the bag and about to go out to selected labels. With evocative melodies, soaring strings, and his inimitable take on the melodic techno sound, the year ahead promises new and exciting horizons.
