After hours is a different job. The peak-time pressure has gone, the room has thinned out, and the people left are there for the music. So the records get longer, the grooves get deeper, and nobody needs a big moment every three minutes.
That’s the idea behind this mix. I’m Craig Mars, and this is House Mix 004, my After Hours House Music Mix Pt.1: 1 hour 24 minutes of rolling tech house and deep tech, with a run of classic house remixes through the middle. (Pt.1, because there’s more where this came from.)
I opened with the Gorge and Nick Curly remix of Malikk’s So Smooth on 8Bit, then mixed into Mike Delgado’s Byrdman’s Revenge and Piem and Andrew Nak’s Synthetic. By 12 minutes I was on Cécille with Reboot’s Rambo (V666) and LondonGround and BizZa’s Rocket. Cécille is a label I keep coming back to, and it won’t be the last time it turns up on my channel.
The middle is where I let the mix settle. Danny Serrano’s Subway, Daniel Steinberg’s No Good, Mateo Dufour’s Break It Up and Jesse Perez and Blue Mystic’s Esa Chiquita keep things steady without pushing. Then I brought in Nic Fanciulli’s Lalo’s Groove in the Marco Carola Edit on Saved Records, with Chris Gruber’s Just A Feeling on 8Bit and Fanciulli’s Revolution, also on Saved, a few tracks later.
From about 50 minutes I lean on house history. Kevin Saunderson, E-Dancer and Dantiez’s Dancer on One House, Redshape’s Bonuz Me on Running Back, and Avision’s remix of Inner City’s Big Fun. (The original came out in 1988 and still gets a reaction.) Radio Slave and Kameelah Waheed’s All Rize in the Harry Romero Remix Dub and Jewel Kid and Harry Romero’s What Happened carry it on. Old records, new angles, same dance floor.
I took the last 20 minutes from Cevin Fisher and Loleatta Holloway’s You Got Me Burning Up! in the Supernova In Stereo Mix, to Basement Jaxx’s Fly Life in the Paco Osuna Remix, and out on the Cinthie and Meat remix of Huxley’s Box Clever. I wanted it to finish loose and warm rather than hard, which is how an after hours set should end. (The sun is probably up by now.)
