Strictly Rhythm was founded on 1 May 1989 in New York. Gladys Pizarro and Mark Finkelstein started it.

In the 1990s it had hits with Roger Sanchez, Todd Terry, Masters at Work and Armand Van Helden.

The label folded in 2002 and relaunched in 2007. BMG bought its catalogue in 2013 and 2015.
