What happened to Cevin Fisher?

His family confirmed the news in a statement on Friday 30 October, reported by Mixmag and EDM House Network. He died on Thursday 29 October, three days after his 63rd birthday. The statement, as Mixmag quotes it, says he died after a brief bout with cancer.

The same statement describes him as kind and funny, a personal trainer who loved basketball and, later, skiing in the Jura Mountains near his home in France. He is survived by his wife, children and wider family.

Who was Cevin Fisher?

He was born Kevin Fisher in East Orange, New Jersey, on 26 October 1963, according to Wikipedia. He started DJing as a teenager and, as Mixmag reports, had his first residency at Club Zanzibar in Newark at 17. Paradise Garage and The Loft were part of the scene he came up in, and Tony Humphries and Larry Levan were early mentors.

In a 2009 interview with DMC World he talked about Danny Tenaglia as a long-term mentor, and EDM House Network says it was Tenaglia who advised him to focus on his own productions.

Before the hits, he worked with Arthur Baker on remixes of Chaka Khan’s Love You All My Lifetime and Quincy Jones’s I’ll Be Good to You. Then came The Freaks Come Out in 1998, released as Cevin Fisher’s Big Freak, and (You Got Me) Burning Up in 1999, with Loleatta Holloway. EDM House Network and KRBE both say the two records reached number one on the US Billboard dance club chart. Official Charts shows Burning Up peaking at number 14 in the UK, after it first charted in February 1999.

The Freaks Come Out kept coming back. In 2019 David Guetta revisited it as Jack Back, with Fisher on board, on 2000 Freaks Come Out.

He kept releasing for decades, on labels including Subliminal and Toolroom as well as his own Import Tracks, according to his official site. He teamed up with Mark Knight on Rocket Man in 2016, and in July 2025 he put out The Message with The Deepshakerz.

His name is on a new compilation too. 30 Years of Drumcode, out now, includes a new version of Traction (The Way We Used To Do It) by Charles D and the late Cevin Fisher.

He started behind the decks at 17 and was still making records last year. Put on The Freaks Come Out this weekend and let it run.
