The Art of the DJ: Steve Lawler

The Art of the DJ is an 80-minute documentary about Steve Lawler and his nearly 30 years in underground dance music.

Carl Cox, Darren Hughes, Danny Whittle, James Todd and Ben Turner appear, along with Steve’s friends and family.

The film covers his early life. He found dance music at 16, tried a string of ordinary jobs, then started throwing illegal parties in a tunnel under the M42. He is open about his drug use and the damage it did to his reputation. A violent attack made him rethink things and rebuild his career.

It follows him from UK resident DJ to flying abroad for gigs, then to Ibiza. He played long days at Cafe Mambo, nearly sold his record collection, then got a call from Cream founder Darren Hughes. A Cream residency raised his profile and led to nine years at Space, where he became known as “King of Space”.

There is archive footage of the Space Terrace and Cream, plus new interviews.
